NBSC FOSTERS A CULTURE OF CARE THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH FORUM
Northern Bukidnon State College (NBSC) continued to advance student-centered initiatives through the mental health forum “Understanding Suicide and How We Can Help Each Other,” held on February 25, 2026, at the Student Welfare and Development Center (SWDC), 1st Floor Lobby. Spearheaded by the Guidance and Counseling Office (GCO), the activity gathered NBSCians in a purposeful dialogue on awareness, early intervention, and shared responsibility in supporting one another’s well-being.
The session featured Reynan S. Salo, MAPsy, Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development Coordinator as resource speaker, who led a comprehensive discussion on recognizing signs of emotional distress and responding with discernment. Among the key concepts explored was the window of tolerance, a framework describing the range of stress a person can manage before becoming overwhelmed. By unpacking how individuals react to pressure and emotional strain, the forum provided students with a clearer understanding of behavioral shifts that may signal a need for support.
A central highlight of the discussion was the ACT framework: Acknowledge, Care, and Tell, which encourages students to notice when someone may be struggling, respond with empathy, and refer the situation to trusted adults or appropriate offices when necessary. The conversation also examined protective factors, categorized as Internal or Individual, Social and Relational, and Institutional and Environmental, that help cultivate resilience. Together, these perspectives emphasized that mental wellness is shaped not only by personal coping skills, but also by relationships and the broader campus environment.
The GCO reiterated its commitment to maintaining a space where students may seek guidance without fear of judgment. The organizers likewise expressed appreciation for the steadfast support of NBSC President Christie Jean Villanueva-Ganiera, Ed.D, CESE; Dr. Jovelyn G. Delosa, Vice-President for Academic Affairs; and Rowena E. Bagongon, MA, Director of the Student Affairs, Services, and Development Division (SASDD), whose leadership sustains programs dedicated to holistic student development.
Through initiatives such as this, NBSC reinforces a campus climate grounded in attentiveness and proactive care. By equipping students with practical knowledge and encouraging open dialogue, the institution strengthens a community where support is accessible, conversations are met with understanding, and collective well-being remains a shared priority.
